If it is latex paint use Denatured alcohol..do not use krud kutter, goof off or oops as some will suggest here..it has deantured alcohol in it but also has inert ingredients that will take the dye out of a fabric or lighten it..I have painted 37 years and we have always used denatured alcohol on paint if it got tracked onto carpet etctera..here is a picture of what it looks like available at wal mart home depot or any hardware store..
References :
http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=17631&utm_source=nextag&utm_medium=se&utm_campaign=2008&cookietest=1
