Summer’s POV.
I look around “my” room. I’m obviously going to share it with Joy; no way am I letting her stay in a room alone. The walls are an eggshell-white with moldings along the ceiling. There’s a shaggy white and brown carpet over the dark mahogany wooden floors. The bed is probably king-sized with a large dark wooden headboard that matches the floor almost exactly. The sheets are a cream and oatmeal leopard print and the duvet cover is a chocolate brown. At the foot of the bed there’s a big antique-looking trunk. There’s a large mirror next to the door that faces the bed. It takes up almost the entire wall. The other walls have pictures of wild animals on them. There’s a bedside table on either side of the bed. One of them has a stack of books on it and the other a nightlight and an alarm clock. On one wall there’s a beautiful dresser and on the other there’s a pretty couch that looks really comfortable. There’s a flat screen TV on a stand on the other side of the room. So this room is pretty much one of the prettiest ones I’ve ever seen. I pick Joy up and walk over to the bed. I sit down and almost fall asleep instantly. It’s one of the most comfortable beds I’ve ever sat on, too.
“Joy, sweetie, how about you get some sleep, okay? You must be really tired…” I whisper. It’s already 2 A.M. – or so the clock says.
“I want my mommy…” she cries. I lay her down and tuck her in the large bed.
“I know you do, Joy, but I’m here okay? I’m going to keep you safe,” I promise. I kiss her forehead and start humming the best lullaby I can think of; the one Nick wrote for me. He played it for me yesterday. The thought of it makes me choke up, but I keep humming. Soon enough, Joy drifts off into an uneasy sleep. When I’m sure she’s asleep, I get up. I try the lock on the door and am surprised when I find out it was just unlocked. I lock it so no one can get in with Joy asleep. I walk into the bathroom and lock that door, too, so they can’t get in from the other side. This room is also beautiful, but why stress on a bathroom? I mean, does it have a huge shower that could fit five people and a bathtub that looks like a Jacuzzi? Sure it does, but is that really important? I walk to “Joy’s” room and I can’t believe my eyes. What kind of kidnapping is this?! The room is fully pink with a big pink bed. There’s a deep purple rug on the floor in the shape of a giant heart and pictures of horses along the walls. There’s a princess TV you always see in those toy stores and a billion and one coloring books on a low table. Not only that, but the room has the name Joy painted beautifully on one of the walls. I can’t believe Drew and Alex. I roll my eyes, and as I do, I catch the mural on the ceiling. It’s a big blue sky with a shining sun and a skywriting that says “Sweet Dreams”. I walk out of the room and back to Joy in our bed. I lay down next to her and close my eyes. I miss the warmth of Nick’s arms around me; the feel of his soft kisses on my shoulder before I fall asleep; his hot breath on my neck as he slowly drifts off to sleep; him whispering my name in his sleep. Tears start to well up in my eyes and run down my cheeks. I miss him so much. And I miss Brooke so much. And Kevin and Joe and Molly and Frankie… I miss them all so much. I end up crying myself to sleep.
“Summer…” I hear someone say quietly.
“Two more minutes,” I mutter into the pillow.
“Summer, wake up please before Alex comes up here,” the voice says urgently. I shoot up and almost knock Drew in the head.
“Please don’t hurt us,” I whimper immediately when I see his raised hand.
“I’m not going to hurt you, Summer, I told you that,” he says and lowers his hand.
“Now, could you please wake Joy up before Alex decides it’s taking too long? I need your clothing sizes. Alex is making me leave the house to buy you some clothes. So you do everything he says, okay? I’ll be back as soon as I can,” Drew says. I nod.
A couple minutes later I’ve given him our sizes and he’s gone. I crawl back into the bed and tell Joy to go back to sleep. I snuggle up to the pillow and close my eyes.
